This Buddha has been repainted many times over the years which is customary in Burma.  The back of the Buddha has eroded over time.  This should not be confused with wood that is rotten.  It is still very stable and has a good weight.  Tropical hard woods typically take hundreds of years to decay.  Our guess is that the erosion on the back is due to being exposed to rain.  Many of these Buddhas are from an outdoor setting.  It is the reason we purchased the piece.  It has real character.
